WHAT IS AICD?

AICD is automatic implantable cardiac defibrillator.

This is implanted just like a pace maker under the skin below the collar bone to prevent sudden heart death. It consists of two parts, one small computer called pulse generator and electrical wires by which it is connected to the heart.

WHEN YOU NEED AICD IMPLANTATION?

To prevent sudden cardiac death in situations where it is anticipated

HOW AICDS HELP?

  • It records the heart rythm continously
  • It shocks the heart in case of dangerous fast heart rythms like ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation
  • It paces the heart in case heart stops suddenly

HOW AICD IS IMPLANTED?

AICDs are implanted in cathlab under local anesthesia and under the cover of antibiotics.

You need to be in the hospital for 3 to 4 days. The pulse generator box is implanted in a space beneath the skinor muscle. The leads are are connected to heart with the help of imaging

HOW LONG THE AICD LASTS?

Usually the battery for the device lasts 7 to 10 years

IS THERE ANY COMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROCEDURE?

  • Infection
  • Hemetoma formation
  • Lead displacement
  • Pneumothorax
