WHAT IS RESYNCHRONISATION THERAPY?

In some heart failure situations both the ventricles may not work synchronously owing to the specific pathology affecting . This contribute to furthur reduction in ejection from them and aggravation of heart failure symtptoms. To an extent this can be detected by ECG. These situation can be treated by either CRT-P( Biventricular Pacing) or CRT-D ( Biventricular pacing with defibrillation)

The device is a pocket sized computer and insulated wires which goes to your heart.

HOW IT IS DONE?

It need hospitalisation for 4 to 5 days. You need to be admitted on the prior day once the decision and all pre-operative tests are done. Before the procedure all your doubts and the precautions after the procedure should all be discussed with your doctor.

The procedure is done under local anesthesia in th cath-lab. There will be a small cut on your left chest. Under the skin or the muscle, the match box sized computer is implanted and wires arising from the computer are docked to your heart.

All these are done under extreme sterile precautions.

The procedure may take about 4 to 5 hours.

During the procedure the device will be checked multiple times

WHAT ARE THE PRECAUTIONS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

You will be cared in the coronary care unit under the cover of antibiotic. The arm on the side of device may be strapped to prevent the lead displacement. Daily ECG will be taken. Wounds will be inspected for signs of any wound complications.

HOW CRT WORKS?

The mini-computer is capable of detecting and analysing the electrical activity in the heart and its consequent rhythm. In case of biventricular pacing , it sends regular impulses to both ventricles simultaneously making both contract simultaneously.

WHAT IS CRT-D?

This biventricuoar pacing combined with automatic defibrillation.

HOW LONG THE BATTERY WORKS ?

The life span of battery may be less than an ordinary pacemaker because energy recquirement will be larger. The remaining charge on the device can be noted in the regular check-ups

WHAT ARE THE LONG TERM PRECAUTIONS?

Avoid storng magnetic fields like MRIs, microwave owens.

Notify the surgeon if it involves usage of electrocautery.

Notify security systems in airports
